GLOBAL MILITARY ADVISORY COUNCIL ON CLIMATE CHANGE (GMACCC)

Type: Civil Society Organisation / NGO

Scope: International

Description:

The Global Military Advisory Council on Climate Change (GMACCC) - coordinated by EDRC - was established in 2009 as an authoritative voice on the need for, and the nature of, action to be taken by the security community to reduce the risks posed to national security by a changing climate.

GMACCC is composed of individual members—who are serving and retired military leaders and security professionals from around the world—and institutional members working on climate security issues across the globe.

Key Activities:

In preparation for Project CASA, GMACCC members assembled an illustrative data collection plan to assess prospects for capturing a military's involvement in both domestic and foreign emergencies.

Understanding the national structures, funding mechanisms and statutory authorities that guide a military's role in emergencies is key to tracking the personnel and funding involved in such activities over the years. GMACCC members will be key to informing and vetting national research and data collection plans developed in Project CASA. GMACCC members play a leading role in the data collection, analysis and policy recommendations parts of the project.
